When concentrated, salt is a formidable enemy for living cells, because it absorbs water easily. This property means that it can deprive plant roots of a good portion of the water available in the soil when it is in high concentration. The use of salt sparingly as an anti-slip agent is therefore recommended during the winter. Sand and fine gravel should therefore be preferred if the use of salt is not required.
